The Midlothian/Richmond area of Virginia is home to many hidden Mexican gems. El Cerro Azul (The Blue Hill) is among the best, serving fresh, tasty Mexican and Tex-Mex specialties at amazing prices.
We started out with an off-the-menu item, jalapeños toreados, flash fried jalapeños seasoned with lime and salt. To cool down the heat, we ordered the $1 margarita special (Thursdays only) and horchata, a sweet rice/almond drink flavored with cinnamon and vanilla. The main entree: carnitas, savory slow-cooked pork butt served with Mexican rice, refried beans and warm corn tortillas. The meal ended on a sweet note -- fried ice cream loaded with whipped cream and drizzled with honey.
